New report backs info that Canada will get Xperia ZL

Yesterday we brought you a report that the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL will be joining forces to tackle the competition in Canada.
Today, courtesy of Sony Xperia CA, comes a confirmation that the Xperia ZL will be Canada-bound, which is great news for those who fancy it over the more slender Xperia Z.

The Xperia Z and Xperia ZL share a lot of similarities, like the 5" 1080p Mobile BRAVIA 2 display but while the Xperia Z is thinner (7.9 mm vs 9.8 mm) and offers extra water and dust protection the Xperia ZL is shorter whilst retaining the same screen diagonal.
We expect to hear more about the availability of both smartphones in other countries too, so stay tuned.

Full-res Sony Xperia Z camera samples surface from CES

Lucky fellow journalists got the chance to smuggle out an Xperia Z outside the CES grounds for a short photo shoot and they've published the results.

Sony made a real splash with their Xperia Z and ZL announcement at CES this year. Besides the 5-inch 1080p screen, the Xperia Z features a 13MP camera with an Exmor RS sensor, which is supposedly improved over last year's Exmor R lineup. There is also a built-in real-time HDR mode for shooting video, which sounds intriguing, to say the least.

According to the guys over at BestBoys.de, who got to shoot with the Xperia Z, the auto focus is incredibly responsive both in continuous and in touch mode.

From what we see, image sharpness is not ideal at 100% magnification but other than that, we definitely see improvement over last year's Xperia T. The noise levels are lower and the exposure metering seems correct.

We even got a video with the new HDR video mode. The effect is visible when shooting backlit or dark subjects. The "HDR" algorithm opens up the shadows to create a more evenly illuminated scene without blowing up the highlights.

Video quality (sharpness, especially) is really good though the continuous auto focus is on the slow side (which can be an advantage in certain situations). So we are definitely witnessing an improvement over the Xperia T. Reportedly, however, the camcorder strangely lacks the option for video stabilization, unlike the Xperia T.

Sony Xperia Z to hit all major Australian carriers

 

Sony is definitely determined to bring the Xperia Z flagship as in many countries as possible and, of course, as soon as possible.

Australia is the next major market the Sony Xperia Z is going to hit this March. Telstra has already opened forms where you can register your interest of buying the device.

According to the Head of Sony Mobile Oceania, the Australian Optus and Vodafone should also be offering the Xperia Z as well. This means that all major carriers in Oz will be offering the latest Sony flagship.

There is no info on the pricing and the exact launch date, but we guess the price tag on contract won't be that different from its competitors.

Sony Xperia Z might arrive in Europe on February 18

Sony Xperia Z is the highlight of this year's CES, but it was only expected to hit the shelves in March. Various online retailers already listed the phone for the beginning of March and on about ?530 (?650) price.

According to an authorized Sony retailer for Poland we might not have to wait all that long. The website of the store lists the smartphone with a February 18 release. The price however stands at a rather steep ?680.

This is not an official Sony store, but is an officially authorized retailer, so there is some credibility to the announced date. Of course there is a note that the date is subject to change, but here's hoping this is just a standard disclaimer.

Both Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL will be available in Canada

It seems that the early info that the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL aren't going be sharing markets was wrong - Sony Mobile's Twitter account posted a message saying that both models will be available in Canada.

Both Android phones were announced at CES and they share a lot of their specs, including screen and chipset. The Xperia Z is thin (7.9mm) and waterproof, but has a larger footprint (139 x 71mm), while the Xperia ZL is not water-proof and is thicker (9.8mm), but it's smaller (131.6 x 69.3).

There are some other differences, you can check our hands-on for the full details.

Anyway, it's a good thing that Sony is letting users choose which model they want. Worldwide launch plans are still not officially announced, so it's not clear if other regions like mainland Europe, the UK and Australia (all of which are slated to get the Xperia Z) will have such a choice.

Sony ST26i official name to be Sony Xperia J

The Xperia ST26i first popped up more than two months ago, but we've heard little about it since. Well, now, thanks to the Indonesian communications regulatory body we get to know its official name. The certificate for the upcoming smartphone was spied on the website of Postel and it listed its name as Sony Xperia J ST26i.
The ST26i model name stands for a mid-range device and the specifications we've heard so far confirm this status. The Sony Xperia J is will reportedly be built around a 4" (480 x 854 pixels) display and a Qualcomm MSM7627A chipset, which features a single-core Scorpion CPU clocked at 1GHz.
The Xperia J is supposed to launch with Android 4.0.4 ICS, but we still don't know if it will ever get a 4.1 Jelly Bean update. We hope Sony mentions something about it whenever it gets round to actually announcing the phone. Sadly, we don't have any information on when said announcement might happen or when the Xperia J will actually hit the shelves.

Sony Xperia ion for AT&T review: US Xperiance

Sony was the talk of town during CES 2012 back in January and the Xperia ion for AT&T was among the main reasons why. Launched alongside the Xperia S, the Sony Xperia ion took the great honor of being the company's first LTE smartphone. To make the matters even more epic, the smartphone marked Sony Mobile's grand return to the most lucrative segment of the US smartphone market - that of the high-end, tricked out handsets with spec sheets as long as a daily newspaper. In a nutshell, the Sony Xperia ion was a big deal anyway you looked at it.

Arriving to the market six months after its announcement, the Sony Xperia ion has a different smartphone landscape to face. Samsung and HTC have already released their heavy hitters in the United States, packing better internals, and offering more up-to-date software experience. To put it mildly - arriving late to the party, the Sony Xperia ion now finds itself outgunned by the competition.

What makes this occurrence particularly frustrating is the fact that this wasn't the case at the smartphone's announcement six months ago. Back in January, the Xperia ion for AT&T could go have a go at any top-of-the-line Android smartphone on the market and emerge victorious.

To offset the massive delay, the Sony Xperia ion is priced quite aggressively. AT&T asks only $99.99 for the smartphone. Should you choose to pick one up directly from Sony though, you will only have to shell out $49.99 with a two-year contract. Cutting edge it might be not, but the Sony Xperia ion still offers you a lot of smartphone for the money. Here goes the list of its full talents.

As you have probably noticed above, the Sony Xperia ion for AT&T is rather closely related to the Xperia S, which came to be quite popular. In order to be more appealing to the US users however, the handset has seen its screen stretch up a bit. The microSD card slot is also a nice addition to the spec sheet - after all, the handset is made for consuming multimedia and playing videogames.

The biggest letdown about the Sony Xperia ion for AT&T is undoubtedly the lack of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Sony's customization of Android 2.3 Gingerbread is quite polished but still - it simply does not befit a mid-2012 high-end device. The battery life could have also been much better, given the handset's knack for multimedia.

You can now pre-order the Sony Xperia go in the UK

 

The Sony Xperia go, a tough little dual-core droid, has swam to British shores and has began taking pre-orders. Right now, it's only offered SIM-free from multiple online retailers.

Clove UK is asking ?225 for the IP67 certified phone. Right now only the black version can be selected (but the white and yellow ones are listed too) and there's a note saying that the first stock is due this week.

Unlocked-mobiles has it a tad cheaper - ?220 - and they say they have the Xperia go in stock (but oddly it's still a pre-order) and should start shipping today.

Play.com will be a little late to the party - their site lists the phone as due for release on July 18 but you can pre-order it now for ?235. Both Unlocked-mobiles and Play.com make no mention of other color options.

Expansys does list all three color versions of the Sony Xperia go - Black, White and Yellow - but they say nothing about price or launch date on any of them.

We checked the sites of UK carriers and none of them currently offer the rugged Xperia.

Rumored Sony Xperia SL LT26ii might bring a CPU upgrade

About a week ago, a Sony Xperia SL LT26ii showed up on the Indonesia's version of the FCC. The site offered no info on its specs, but immediately there were speculation that the SL will be to the Xperia S what the arc S was to the Xperia arc.

Now, a tipster has contacted XperiaBlog and told them that the Xperia SL will offer a CPU upgrade and will be available in a new color. The tipster didn?t offer any details on the potential new processor, but if we follow the "arc -> arc S" example, it should be a frequency bump (the MSM8260 chipset is clocked at 1.5GHz in the Xperia S, but can run at up to 1.7GHz).

It's clear that they can't call the new phone Xperia S S, but the letter L might have been chosen for another reason. Remember the Xperia neo L, which increased the screen size of the neo V and launched with ICS instead of Gingerbread.

So far, this is all deep inside the rumor mill and we'd wait for more evidence confirming the existence and specs of the Sony Xperia SL - a leaked user agent XML or a camera sample accidentally uploaded to Picasa are usually how it goes.

Sony Xperia S owners rejoice as Android 4.0 ICS arrives

Sony has just released the long awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its Xperia S flagship smartphone. The handset was announced back in January and hit the shelves in the end of February.

But it?s finally here folks - Sony is seeding the ICS update right now. In addition to all vanilla improvements from Google, Sony added a few tweaks of its own to the multimedia apps. Here is the official video from Sony:

Android 4.0 update for Xperia active starts rolling out

Good news if you are an owner of the Sony Xperia active. Sony has announced on its blog that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update is now rolling out for the phone.

As is usual for these things, the update is being rolled out in batches and will be available in all the regions over a period of time.

When the update arrives on your phone you will get a notification. Alternatively, you can check manually to see if the update is available for download. Just keep the Sony PC Companion ready for when the update arrives so you can download and install it.

Sony Xperia ion available on AT&T, June 24 for $99

I might have misfired with my prediction that Sony’s little Facebook experiment would be the ion. A matter of days later, we have confirmation that the ion will make its promised Q2 2012 release date on AT&T by the skin of its teeth.

The ion will be the first Sony sans Ericsson smartphone to launch in the US, and it’s a very respectable handset, especially considering the price at launch will be just $99.

The specs are somewhat middle of the road by now, but I’d put it at the front of the mid-range devices. The one hangup there is that it will be running Android 2.3.7 at launch with no specific date for an Android 4.0 update.

It’s been awhile, but we did get some hands on time when they first announced the ion at CES. I came away quite impressed with the hardware. The camera in particular is very well done and can go from standby to shooting an image in just seconds. You can watch our test of that feature below.

The PlayStation Certification is worth noting as well since it may finally start paying dividends for users this year, with Sony seeming to have found some renewed interest in the program.

By the time this launches on June 24, you’ll be able to head into an AT&T store and try it out side-by-side with the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III. While I personally would lean toward one of those options, I can certainly see this doing well with folks that want to save $100 on a new phone.

Sony Xperia miro gets officially unveiled on Facebook

Apparently, Sony's Facebook counter, which we told you about a couple of days ago has reached its magic number, so here is the object of all the anticipation. Meet the Sony Xperia miro - the company's latest mid-range Android smartphone with a solid knack for social networking.

Probably due to fact that the announcement was automatically generated, we do not have the full spec sheet of the newcomer. What we do know is that the Xperia miro packs a 3.5" screen, 5MP camera, DLNA, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and, of course, a bunch of Sony exclusive software tricks to go with the adjustable illumination effects of the handset.

There is no info on retail availability or pricing of the freshly announced device. Naturally, we'll keep you posted as soon as we find out.

Sony Xperia tipo and tipo dual are entry-level ICS droids

Sony surprised everyone when they announced the Xperia miro and the surprises keep coming - the company also announced the entry-level ICS droids called Sony Xperia tipo and tipo dual. What's unique about the Xperia tipo dual is that it's the company's first dual-SIM device.

The Xperia tipo is a compact phone (103 x 57 x 13 mm, 99.4g) and features a 3.2" HVGA TFT screen with scratch-resistant mineral glass. It will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at launch, and is powered by an 800MHz processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7225AA chipset).

The phone has the essentials - a 3.2MP camera, 2.9GB of built-in memory (expandable by a microSD card), 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port and a 1500mAh battery. On the connectivity side, there's HSPA-enabled 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS.

The Sony Xperia tipo will be available in a dual-SIM version too - called Xperia tipo dual. Both cards will not be active at the same time - it's not a dual standby deal. Instead, a special button on the side of the tipo dual would allow you to toggle the currently active SIM.

Both versions will launch globally in Q3 of 2012 in Classic black, Classic white, Deep red and Navy blue. There's no pricing info available yet.

Sony gives fans control over the next Xperia announcement

It might not have the build up of a major press announcement like the Galaxy S III, but Sony is giving something new a go over on their Facebook page by letting fans “fast forward” to the announcement of the next Xperia smartphone.

This started yesterday morning and the announcement was originally scheduled for June 22nd, but every time a user clicks the big orange button the clock jumps ahead (just one turn per day). They’ve had a pretty solid response so far as a little over 24,000 people have clicked the button and thus brought the announcement up to the afternoon of June 13th as it stands right now.

Now I’m guessing that Sony isn’t probably unveiling anything revolutionary here, but they do still owe us one Xperia Ion for AT&T by the end of June. Despite the fans on their Facebook page doing some minor rioting in favor of an Xperia Play 2 I’m pretty sure they would have brought that out at E3 last week if it were that far along.

In case I’m right about this being the Ion, I’ll give a quick refresher, as I was pretty impressed with it at CES. The highlights were the 4.65-inch 1280×720 Reality Display which was one of the best looking displays I’ve seen in terms of contrast and color reproduction. The other big feature was the 12 MP Exmor-R camera which was able to fire off a shot from standby in under 2 seconds. On the downside it was slated to launch with Gingerbread, though we’re hoping Sony’s wised up and puts Android 4 on this bad boy.

Xperia mini pro and Live with Walkman receiving Android 4.0

Sony is continuing its commitment to product support by bringing the latest and greatest in Android to these mid-range phones. A few days ago we already let you know that the Xperia mini pro is getting Android 4.0 worldwide. The same seems to apply to the Sony Live with Walkman as well.
The updates are hardly surprising as the Sony update roadmap had it these two would be getting their ICS fix starting on the last week of May.
If you have an Xperia mini pro, you should get a notification on the screen asking you to update it. At this point you will have to connect the phone to the Sony PC Companion or Bridge for Mac and install the update.
If you haven't received an update notification yet, keep an eye on the roll-out schedule.

The case of the Live with Walkman update is a bit more murky, as there are no notifications for that yet and there's even no word about it on the Sony's support pages. But as our reader, Gurpreet Singh, reports, the Sony Live with Walkman WT19i can be updated with ICS 4.0 with the help of the Sony Update Service (SUS), which can be downloaded from the Sony's website.

Sony Xperia U review: Fun united

The Xperia S has all the spotlight to itself in the NXT series, but history has taught us that Sony (and previously Sony Ericsson) can do wonders in the compact class. In two generations of minis and the Xperia ray, the Japanese have delivered packages that no one in the same price range can beat.

We are not saying those smartphones were perfect - it's all about cutting the right corners in this class and Sony's engineers have proven time and time again that they are pretty good at that. The Xperia U is seemingly no exception, judging by a quick glance at the list of pros and cons.

The Sony Xperia U specs sheet reads like a high-end device for the most part and the design of the smartphone easily manages to keep pace. Sure it's not the slim sweetness of the Xpera ray, but the Xperia U is still nicely compact and the transparent strip, which changes its color to match the screen contents, is a cool accent.

The obvious catch is the very limited internal storage - 4GB for your documents and media files and 2GB for apps is what you get out of the box and, if that's a deal breaker, you should probably start looking for other options as there's no way around it.

Sony Xperia GX camera video sample surfaces

It looks like someone else got their hands on an Xperia GX in a Japanese DoCoMo store, and decided to take a video showing off the 13MP camera.

Like the still image samples, the video is taken indoors, and does not show much in the way of the full capabilities of the sensor. Nevertheless, it is of full 1080p resolution.

The Sony Xperia GX has garnered some criticism for reportedly being a Japan-only device, despite some hints that an international version may be in the works. Here's to hoping that we'll see the slick device in our neck of the woods someday.

Sony Xperia P, U and sola availability extends to Europe, US

The availability of three of Sony's latest Xperia phones has widened to include Europe, it is getting a foothold in the States too and various other countries as well. The Sony Xperia U and P have been available in Hong Kong and Taiwan for a while now, but they've finally traveled west.
