Samsung Galaxy S series shipments surpass 100 million

It's no secret that Samsung's Galaxy S series of smartphones has been a game changer, for the company as well as for Android smartphones in general. Now the series has reached a new landmark, with the total worldwide shipments exceeding 100 million units since the first Galaxy S device shipped two and a half years ago.

The Galaxy S III has been the biggest and fastest contributor so far, with 40 million shipments coming in the first seven months after launch and currently shipping close to 190,000 units every day. The venerable Galaxy S II, which has been around for almost two years now, has managed to ship 40 million units in 20 months.

With people now eagerly looking forward to the next flagship in the series, we don't see the popularity of the Galaxy S brand waning any time soon.

Verizon sold 9.8 million smartphones in Q4

 

As AT&T, Verizon has yet to release a full financial report for the final quarter of 2012 but an SEC filing gives a few interesting details. The carrier sold 9.8 million smartphones in the holiday quarter, a big jump from Q3's 6.8 million.

The filing hints at a "higher mix" of iPhones but gives no exact numbers. For Q3 the numbers were 3.4 million Androids and 3.1 million iPhones, of which 21% (around 650K) were iPhone 5's.

Since the iPhone 5 was announced at the end of Q3, we can expect to see it make up a much bigger portion of the iPhone mix for Q4. The carrier is expecting to record lower margins compared to Q4 2011 though.

AT&T sets new record, sells 10 million smartphones in Q4

AT&T is still not ready to reveal all the details regarding its financial Q4, but it can already confirm that the last quarter of 2012 has been its most successful yet.

The carrier managed to beat its own record, shipping more than 10 million smartphones from October through December, which adds up to just over 110 000 smartphones per day. AT&T's CEO Ralph de la Vega also said that the quarter saw record sales of Android smartphones and iPhones.

Interestingly, Mr. De La Vega didn't say anything about record WP8 sales, despite the Lumia 920 exclusivity that AT&T is enjoying in the US and the bold claims by Steve Ballmer.

The previous AT&T record was set in Q4 of 2011 and stood at 9.4 million smartphones sold.

AT&T will release its full Q4 financial report on January 24.

Nokia beats expectations, sells 4.4 million Lumias in Q4

 

Nokia released a preliminary report on its performance in Q4 2012 and things are starting to look up. Nokia beat expectations with the non-IFRS operating margin expected to be between breakeven and 2%, while expectations were for negative 2-10%.

Nokia's Devices & Services department is reporting ?2.5 billion in net sales, nearly half of which (?1.2 billion) coming from Smart devices (note that Nokia is counting its Asha full touch phones as smarthpones). It helps that operating expenses were lower than expected too.

The company sold 79.6 million phones, including 9.3 million Ashas and 6.6 million proper smartphones. The breakdown is this - 4.4 million Lumia phones and 2.2 million Symbians.

Nokia is also getting a ?50 million sum from non-recurring IPR income (coincidentally, RIM recently had to pay Nokia ?50 million after a patent settlement).

Anyway, the Nokia Siemens networks also exceeded expectations and posted a profit for a third quarter in a row. The non-IFRS operating margin for this division in Q4 2012 is expected to be 13-15%.

While Nokia is ending 2012 on a positive note, the start of 2013 will be less rosy - the seasonally weak quarter will lead to a non-IFRS operating margin of negative 2% (+/- 4%).

Samsung expects to sell 10 million Galaxy S III units by July

JK Shin ? Samsung?s head of communications ? has announced the Galaxy S III sales will reach the 10 million milestone by the end of July.

According to earlier reports there were 9 million Galaxy S III pre-orders before the official launch of the smartphone.

It?s yet unclear if those 10 million units are sold or shipped worldwide, but it?s an impressive number either way. The Galaxy S III has been available for just under a month now, with lots of countries and carries still waiting to get it and some unable to fulfill orders due to "overwhelming demand".

Nokia sold 2.2 million Lumia smartphones in Q1, analysts say

Nokia is stubbornly refusing to give us exact numbers on the Lumia lineup, but the analysts from IDC have stepped in to provide some guidance. According to their calculations, the Finns managed to move 2.2 million WP-powered smartphones in the first quarter of this year.

There are two ways to look at that number. The first is by realizing that 2.2 million units is an absurdly small number for a company that has WP as its single hope to get out of the hole it has put itself into. With Symbian doomed and MeeGo abandoned, the WP sales are the only ones that actually count for Nokia in the long run and 2.2 million is barely enough to put the company on the map, let alone suit its world's leading status.

However, you should also keep in mind that Nokia only shipped 1 million Lumia handsets in the first three months of market availability of the series. And that was during a holiday quarter, when overall sales are typically much higher than those in the first three months of the year. So an over two-fold increase is quite the achievement and shows that things are at least moving in the right direction.

So while the start is encouraging, Nokia is still far from safety and the Finnish company still doesn't have their work cut out for them if they want to make the smartphone market a three horse race, as Elop promised last year. The platform itself is currently going through a pretty tough time as its hardware limitations put it some way off the dominant forces on the market. The multi-core chipset-enabling Apollo update can't come soon enough too, as Android owners are already enjoying their Tegra 3s and Exynos Quads.

Here's hoping that Nokia actually announces the number of Lumia smartphones sold in the second quarter in their upcoming financial report, and that they are good.
