Releasing Too Many ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Games Would ‘Fatigue’ the Brand, Rockstar Says

By Joseph Leray

The games industry -- and the media that covers it -- is kind of predicated on the idea that the people that play videogames will just keep buying them indefinitely. It’s part of the reason store shelves are filled with sequels, spin-offs, and reboots.

During a speech at the Wedbush Transfomational Technologies Conference earlier this week, Rockstar chief operations officer Karl Slatoff explained that “Often times people ask us 'Why don't you come out with Grand Theft Auto every two years?'”

The answer, in what I can’t help but read as a dig against Activision’s “Call of Duty” franchise or even Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed” series, is that a yearly model “doesn’t make sense” to Rockstar. “Grand Theft Auto, every single time it comes out, is a brand new experience. You can't possibly do that in two years,” Slatoff explains.

“And if we did that, our product would fatigue and the franchise would degrade from a value perspective.”

I’m not the biggest fan of “Grand Theft Auto” -- or, really, open-world games in general -- but it’s got to be one of the strongest brands in the industry, providing a unified and thematically interesting series consistently for over a decade. No other studio does Americana better, ironically, than Rockstar.

“Grand Theft Auto V” will be released in September for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a healthy five years after “Grand Theft Auto IV.” It’s worth noting that the DS, PSP, and iOS devices were graced by “Chinatown Wars” in 2009, but even that was four years ago -- surely fans of the series are chomping at the bit by now.

So take your time exploring Los Santos -- it’s going to be a while before you’ll get another chance.

ZTE Grand S is now official, packs a 5" 1080p screen in a 6.9mm shell

Just as expected, ZTE has officially announced its 5" flagship smartphone, the Grand S at the CES.

Rocking a 1080p, 5" screen, the ZTE Grand S boast a thin waistline of just 6.9mm making it the thinnest of the 5" smartphones. Under the hood, the ZTE Grand S packs an 1.7GHz S4 Pro quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM.

Just as expected, the Grand S runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and features the usual array of connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and 4G LTE. The main camera is a 13MP unit with LED flash while at the front there's a 2MP snapper.

Powering the whole thing is a 1,780mAh battery, which is non-removable and doesn't sound like much, but considering the slim profile of the smartphone is probably the best we could expect. Here's hoping the battery life isn't bad enough to ruin the whole experience.

The Grand S also has a microSD card slot to expand the 16GB of on-board storage. Dolby Digital Sound enhancements aim to provide the best possible sonic experience.

Expect the ZTE Grand S to hit China in the first quarter of this year with the US to follow suit shortly after. Unfortunately, ZTE hasn't confirmed the Grand S pricing yet.

ZTE unveils Qualcomm S4-powered Grand X LTE

The ZTE Grand X LTE (T82) is slated to run on a 28 nm chipset, namely Qualcomm's MSM8960, which enables it to save on power usage as there will be less individual chips inside sapping your battery life.

The 1900 mAh battery will keep the dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor going, while an 8 MP shooter capable of 1080p video recording will attend to your photography needs.

Pricing is unknown at this time, although we do expect it to hit the Asian and European markets in Q3 of this year.
