Sony C660X 'Yuga' 1080p display leaks in a benchmark score

Shortly after we caught a glimpse of the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset tucked in Sony's upcoming C660X 'Yuga' Android powerhouse in Antutu benchmark results, the handset's screen resolution emerged as well. NenaMark2 scores revealed that a 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) display will sit on top of the powerful internals.

The benchmark score, which has subsequently been removed from the NenaMark2 database, points at a resolution of 1794 x 1080 pixels. The remaining 126 pixels are likely used for the Android on-screen buttons.

There is no information on the physical size of the full HD display. Given the massive amount of pixels involved though, it is highly unlikely that the unit will be sized below 5". A recent announcement from Japan Display Inc. regarding the start of mass production of 5" TFT-LCD IPS display modules with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and pixel density of 443ppi points in this direction. Sony Mobile Display is involved in the aforementioned company together with Toshiba Mobile Display and Hitachi Displays.

Samsung Galaxy Note plagued by display issues

The Samsung Galaxy Note has been enjoying pretty smooth sailing ever since its launch at the end of last year, but it turns out the device isn't perfectly problem-free. It turns out that the 5.3" phoneblet is plagued by a display issue, which was recently discovered by the XDA community.
The issue consists of black clipping and banding in images and videos, which have dark shadows. According to one Galaxy Note owner, who got in touch with us, the issue is most likely due to a kernel level software glitch or due to poor Gamma calibration on the affected screens.
The following videos demonstrate the issue. Note the blown patches that appear on darker scenes.

We are yet to see an official word from Samsung on the matter as well as information on a potential fix.
You can find more information on the issue as well as a way to check if your Galaxy Note has it over here.
Thanks, Satish, for sending this in!

iPhone with 3.9-inch 640 x 1136 pixel display in testing

Two iPhones are reportedly currently in testing over at Apple - codenamed N41AP (or 5,1) and N42AP (5,2). They are enclosed in generic cases to hide the design and offer larger displays with a higher resolution.

The exact specs of the new display are 3.95" diagonal and 640 x 1136 pixel resolution. Those numbers suggest a pixel density of around 330 ppi, which is nearly identical to the 329 ppi on the iPhone 4 and 4S, so the "Retina" moniker will remain intact. The hypothesis is that the screen will still measure 4.93 cm in width but at 8.76 cm it will be notably taller than the one on current-gen iPhone.

If this information turns out true it will mean that the next iPhone will sport an aspect ratio of 16:9 and not the current 3:2 one. The bigger display would also require the upcoming iOS 6 to be optimized to fit more content on the bigger screen. Supposedly Apple is currently testing a custom build of iOS 6 with a fifth row of icons above the docked ones.

Finally, reports are coming in that the next-gen iPhone will retain the home button (but perhaps it will be reduced in size) and utilize a smaller dock connector. We'll have to wait and see what the iPhone 5 (or the new iPhone, sigh) will actually be, but one thing is certain - with the huge screens fitted on the latest Android flagships many iPhone users are rightfully starting to feel a little jealous and it's about time Apple did something about it.

Note: The image is just a mockup and not representative of the final product.
